You may have heard the word ‘matcha’ a lot more recently than you have ever before. The world is going crazy for it, but what exactly is it? Matcha is simply green tea leaves ground into a fine powder meaning that you consume the whole tea leaf rather than what steeps from it. It originated in Japan centuries ago and was traditionally used for tea ceremonies, but has now been recognised for its health benefits, versatility and bright green colour in many other aspects of food and drink- such as in green tea ice cream, matcha lattes, green tea pancakes, waffles, cakes, chocolates… the list is endless. Big brands have even latched onto the worldwide phenomenon, with ice-cream brands Connoisseur and Haagen Dazs releasing their own green-tea flavoured ice-creams. Kit Kat even have a matcha Kit Kat range.
To celebrate the worldwide appreciation for matcha, we’ve collated some our favourite matcha cafes from around the world (excluding Japan because that needs a separate page of it’s own), for old matcha lovers and new matcha discoverers alike!
