There’s nothing like travelling to a country and not realising that it’s going to be a ‘break-the-bank’ kind of trip. To be able to see the world, sometimes we have to bite the bullet and accept that there is never going to be a ‘down-period’ for particular places. Although there are a tonne of ‘cheap’ travel spots, there’s also a myriad of ‘expensive’ travel spots that are equally worth seeing. We’ve listed 4 of some of the most expensive places to visit!

Switzerland

One of the most beautiful, idyllic and untouched areas of the world happens to unfortunately be (for us travellers) the most expensive place in the world to visit. A ‘value’ meal at McDonalds for one person could cost around CHF (Swiss Franc) 14, which is around 20 AUD. For the same price in Australia, you could get a ‘McValue FAMILY meal’ which consists of Choice of any 4 burgers, 4 x Medium Fries 10 x Chicken McNuggets®, 4 x Medium Soft Drinks.

Despite the expensive food, transport and accomodation, Switzerland has some of the incredible scenery that the world has to offer. If you’re a nature-lover and love never-ending landscapes with a range of hills and mountains, you HAVE to visit Switzerland. It’s worth it!

Bermuda

This small British island in the North Atlantic Ocean makes up for it’s size in cost! A single Big Mac meal (or equivalent) could set you back 11 BD which is equivalent to almost 16 AUD whilst a 12 pack of eggs could cost 8 BD which is around 11 AUD.

If you want to see some insanely pristine beaches and pink sand though, this is the place to go!

Norway

One of the most exciting places to visit if it has been on your bucket list to see Scandinavia and the Northern lights! Norwegian everything is becoming more and more popular- especially from a design standpoint. Just like Switzerland though, if you’re after a ‘cheap meal’ from McDonalds, it might not be that ‘cheap’. A meal can range from 90-130 NOK which is equivalent to around 15 AUD – 22 AUD. The most expensive large burger meal that Australian McDonalds has to offer is from the ‘gourmet’ burger selection and even that is less than Norways LOWEST price for any meal at McDonalds. Meanwhile a 330ml bottle of water could put you back 4.40 AUD in Norway!

The wonders of Norway practically speak for themselves. It is home to some of the most unique ‘backyards’ ever!

Iceland

Iceland is one of the only places in the world that doesn’t have McDonalds- all the more reason to visit the amazing country! This doesn’t exclude it from being on of the priciest places to visit though! Your average pizza could cost 3000 ISK which is the same as about 35 AUD. Dining out is considered a treat even for the Icelandic locals so sticking to buying your own groceries is the way to go- they’re not as exuberant!

Although it’s not EVERYONE’S first thought of a place to visit anyway, it’s gaining a lot of traction and rightly so! Iceland is home to endless hikes, mountains, hills and like Switzerland, untouched nature! You feel like you’re driving in one huge national park! Iceland is not ONLY famous for it’s viewing of the Northern Light (put that on your bucket list) but it also boasts some of the most epic cliffs, glaciers, hot springs and waterfalls!
